Oprah Winfrey, Vanessa Williams, CeCe Winans & others honor Derrick Rutledge as Bronner Bros. celebrates beauty pioneers, innovators and the next generation
ATLANTA, GA, UNITED STATES, October 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The second annual Bronner Bros. Beauty Icon Awards brought generations of Black beauty leadership together in Atlanta for a celebration of the artists, founders, entrepreneurs, educators, innovators and industry veterans whose work has shaped how beauty is created and experienced.
Held October 10 at the Riverside Epicenter under the theme, “Midnight Bloom,” the black-tie event connected nearly eight decades of Bronner Bros. history with the people defining the future of beauty.
A CAREER CELEBRATED BY ICONS WHO EXPERIENCED IT FIRSTHAND
A centerpiece of the evening honored celebrity makeup artist Derrick Rutledge, with Oprah Winfrey, Vanessa Williams, CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, Vivica A. Fox and Chanté Moore among those delivering video tributes celebrating his artistry, career and impact. Grammy-winning recording artist Anthony Hamilton and actress Taylor Polidore-Williams presented Rutledge’s honors.
The moment reflected the larger purpose of Beauty Icon: bringing visibility to the people whose artistry, creativity and influence often shape culture from behind the scenes.
The tribute underscored the relationship between beauty professionals and the trends they’ve set.
“So much of what the world understands as beauty started with people whose names are rarely known,” said Kelly Keith, Executive Producer of the Beauty Icon Awards. “Beauty Icon is intentionally changing that. We’re honoring the founders, artists, educators, entrepreneurs and innovators who built this industry and those walking in their footsteps.”
HONORING THE FULL POWER OF BEAUTY
The 2026 Beauty Icon Awards recognized leaders whose influence stretches across artistry, entrepreneurship, professional beauty, visual culture, education and science.
Honorees included Lisa Price, founder of Carol’s Daughter; Olamide Olowe, founder of Topicals; celebrity makeup artist Derrick Rutledge; renowned photographer Derek Blanks; celebrity braider Xia Charles; style innovator and sports personality Sydney Carter; beauty industry pioneer Cornell McBride Sr.; industry leader Germaine Bolds-Leftridge; and Spelman College’s Cosmetic Science program.
Together, the honorees reflected a broader definition of beauty — as artistry, enterprise, science, education, culture and economic influence.
The recognition of Spelman College’s Cosmetic Science program, presented by ECO Style, further expanded that definition, spotlighting the growing role of science, formulation, research and product innovation.
BEAUTY AS ART, MEMORY AND CULTURE
Beauty Icon broke from the traditional awards-show format with immersive creative presentations curated by celebrity hairstylist and Beauty Icon Creative Director Terrence Davidson, often referred to as “The King of Fantasy Hair.”
From the avant-garde world of Enchanted Garden to the nostalgia of 90’s Fine, Davidson used hair, makeup, fashion, dance and large-scale visuals to create fantastical worlds.
The illustrious presentations weaved together the program’s storytelling.
Enchanted Garden pushed imagination, while 90’s Fine reflected on the hair, fashion and visual language of the 1990s — an era whose influence continues to reverberate.
The creative direction highlighted that beauty is not only aesthetic, but also a record of eras.
FROM LEGENDS TO THE NEXT GENERATION
The 2026 Bronner Bros. Hall of Fame inducted Patric Bradley, Brittancia Stewart, Jamahl King of STEPS Events and Michelina W. Barber, recognizing their contributions to professional beauty, education, entrepreneurship and the industry community.
That commitment to legacy extended to an investment in the up and coming.
Earlier in the day, the BB x Vivacé by KISS presents VIVATRESS™ Student Summit welcomed nationwide cosmetology students for a day of education, mentorship and competition.
Students connected with working professionals and industry leaders through conversations about artistry, business, technology and career sustainability.
The summit centered around the Student Fantasy Braid Competition, challenging emerging talent to demonstrate technical skill, creativity and originality before a panel of judges. Finalists advanced through multiple stages of competition — earning cash prizes, product and recognition during the Beauty Icon Awards.
Vivacé by KISS served as title partner of the 2026 Beauty Icon Awards and the VIVATRESS™ Student Summit, extending its investment across the celebration of today’s industry leaders and the development of upcoming professionals.
“The future of beauty is sitting in cosmetology schools right now. Students need more than products — they need access and exposure to see what is actually possible,” said Ivan Chae of Vivacé by KISS. “The Student Summit gave us an opportunity to connect emerging talent with successful, established professionals. Investing in the next generation is incredibly important to us.”
WHERE BEAUTY MEETS CULTURE
Beauty Icon also reflected the deep relationship between professional beauty and popular culture.
Among those participating throughout the celebration were Da Brat, Jesseca “Judy” Harris-Dupart, Anthony Hamilton, Karlie Redd, Jasmine Burke, Taylor Polidore Williams and Cliff Vmir, alongside prominent industry leaders.
Their participation reinforced that what happens in salons, makeup chairs, laboratories and creative spaces does not stay there. It influences television, music, fashion and sports globally.
PURPOSEFUL PARTNERSHIPS
ORS/Namaste marked its 30th anniversary with a special presentation reflecting on the brand’s continued relationship with the professional and consumer beauty communities.
Moroccanoil partnered with Beauty Icon LIVE, the event’s pre-show interview experience highlighting honorees and voices spanning beauty and culture.
ECO Style presented the recognition of Spelman College’s Cosmetic Science program, aligning the honor with the scientists, formulators and academic innovators.
The evening’s hospitality experience was supported by beverage partners Luc Belaire, McQueen and Bumbu.

Bronner Bros. prepares to celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2027.
